Heavy snow can damage branches....using a broom, gently push UP on branches to knock off snow.  If it's a weeping tree, then it's okay to gently brush downwards....

2012 English Literary Garden Tour

Imagine strolling through Jane Austen's garden with the head gardener ..... taking a private tour of the garden that inspired Frances Hodgson Burnett to write The Secret Garden ...... and visiting Gilbert White's house, The Wakes.  Gilbert White is widely considered to be the first ecologist, and was the author of The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, published in 1789.

You'll experience all this and more by joining tour leader Carol Chernega for a 2012 tour of her favorite literary gardens.  Visiting the homes and gardens of your favorite English writers will give you added insight into their writing and provide an added dimension to your enjoyment of their books.  Plus, serious gardeners will enjoy seeing classic representations of English garden style.

The 2012 tour tentatively includes visits to:

bulletChawton Cottage, Jane Austen's home the last 8 years of her life
bulletThe Wakes, Gilbert White's home
bulletThe Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett's home
bulletLamb House, home to both Henry James and E.F. Benson, author of the Mapp & Lucia novels
bulletJohn Keats House
bulletPlus either the Chelsea Flower Show OR the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Here's what past participants have said about our tours:

"It was a delightful trip, very well organized.  We all profited from your familiarity with England."  Marian E.

"I don't know how you could improve this vacation except by issuing new feet each day!"  Sandy C.

The tour will take place either May 2012 (which would include the Chelsea Flower Show) or July 2012 and include the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, depending on which tour has the most interest.  Cast your vote now!  Contact Carol Chernega for more information.

What you should know about our English Tours:

bulletWe arrange private events not available on the usual group tour.
bulletDaily events are usually limited to two per day.  This way you'll have plenty of time to enjoy each garden, rather than feeling rushed.
bulletYou'll have time each day to explore on your own, plus one full free day.
bulletThe tour is organized by Carol Chernega, but the travel arrangements and garden visits will be booked by a British travel agent. An American travel agent will handle payments and plane reservations for those leaving from America.
bulletCarol Chernega is your personal tour leader.  Carol has traveled to England 20 times since her first trip in 1997. Several of those trips were devoted to researching her for book, A Dream House: Exploring the Literary Homes of England.  Her experience makes her uniquely qualified to take you on this literary journey to England's gardens.  For more about Carol, click here
bulletWe usually meet at Newark or a New York airport and travel together from there.
bulletWe require a minimum of 16 people and a maximum of 26 people.
bulletPrivate themed tours can be created for your own group.  Contact us for details.
